18. diphosphorus pentoxide 18. ______________________

19. sulfuric acid 19. ______________________

20. sulfur dioxide 20. ____________________

Types of Chemical Reactions

There are five types of chemical reactions we will talk about:

Synthesis reactions
Decomposition reactions
Single displacement reactions
Double reactions
Combustion reactions

Homework II: Writing Chemical Equations

Writing the Complete Equation Homework
Write the complete chemical equation for each of the following chemical
reactions:
1) When iron solid is placed in liquid lithium sulfate and electricity is added to
it, iron (II) sulfate crystals and solid lithium metal are formed.
2) When the ethanol (C2H6O) in some gasoline burns with oxygen gas in an
automobile engine, it forms carbon dioxide gas and water vapor.
3) When the pressure on an aqueous solution of carbonic acid is decreased
to 0.1 atmospheres, it decomposes to form carbon dioxide gas and water.
4) When iodine gas reacts with methane gas at very high temperatures, CH3I
gas and hydrogen iodide gas are formed.
5) When dinitrogen hexaiodide crystals are hit with a hammer, they
spontaneously and explosively decompose to form nitrogen gas and
iodine powder.
6) When hydrochloric acid gas reacts with gaseous ammonia, water vapor
and solid ammonium chloride are formed.

Homework 1: Types of Chemical REACTIONS

Six Types of Reaction Homework
Fill in the blanks with the correct type of reaction:
1) A(n) _________________________________ reaction is one in which
oxygen reacts with another compound to form carbon dioxide, water, and
heat.
2) A(n) _________________________________ reaction takes place when
one element trades places with an element in an ionic compound. An
example of this reaction is when silver nitrate reacts with copper metal to
form copper (I) nitrate and silver metal.
3) A(n) _________________________________ reaction is one where a
complex molecule breaks apart to form two or more less complicated
molecules.
4) A(n) _________________________________ reaction is one where the
cations of two ionic compounds switch places. An example of this is when
sodium chloride reacts with silver nitrate to form silver chloride and sodium
nitrate.
5) A(n) _________________________________ reaction is when two or
more simple compounds join to form a more complicated one.

For the following questions, balance the equation and indicate what type of
reaction the equation is showing:
6) ____ LiOH + ____ H2SO4  ____ Li2SO4 + ____ H2O
Type of reaction: __________________________
7) ____ C5H12 + ____ O2  ____ CO2 + ____ H2O
Type of reaction: __________________________
8) ____ Fe + ____ Ni(OH)2  ____ Ni + ____ Fe(OH)3
Type of reaction: __________________________
9) ____ NaHCO3  ____ NaOH + ____ CO2
Type of reaction: __________________________
10) ____ Pb(C2H3O2)2 + ____ NaBr  ____ PbBr2 + ____ NaC2H3O2
Type of reaction: __________________________
